Pre-Season Chatter

In an effort to get some Canuck chatter going, I figured I’d post a new topic up here. Let’s hear your predictions for the season. Here are a couple topics to start you off:
- will we come in 1st in the b-central?
- if so, could we win the overall b title?
- which b-central team will be our biggest competition?
- which line combination would be the most successful?
- which defensive combination would be most successful?
- the big question: should Mark play forward or defense?
- what should our PP/PK lines be?
- who is going to win our team’s scoring race?
- how many Canucks will make the top 10 in the b-central scoring race?
- how many goals will Ken score?
- who will be first to break the new 40 minute penalty limit?
- who will have the least penalty minutes?
- who is most likely to have a fans in the stands at every game?
- who is most likely to not miss a single game?
- who will spend the most on new composite sticks?
- how long before Chris buys a new helmet to match his new pads?
- we’ve had an offer or two for a coach - should we have one?
- should we have some more practices?
- how much will we beat the Vipers by? (this one’s for you M.L.)

  • Here’s my not-so-humble opinion:

    - will we come in 1st in the b-central?
-Yes. Besides Sharks and Oilers the b-central division is quite easy, and we should be able to beat both those team too, so…

    - if so, could we win the overall b title?
    - Not sure, it’s tough to tell so soon. If none of the other teams improved much, and we play to our potential, we should be able to.

    - which b-central team will be our biggest competition?
-Sharks. Those little guys probably grew 5 inches over the summer. They were decent last year, and they’re not going to get worse.

    - which line combination would be the most successful?
    - any line with me on it… ;) - seriously, I think that the lines we had in the pre-season game were good, but throw the missing guys in there, and it changes things a bit. I think we’re going to be short-handed a lot anyways, so the lines will probably be mixed up most nights.

    - which defensive combination would be most successful?
    - our defense all played well in our pre-season game. I don’t think that any combination is going to be weak.

    - the big question: should Mark play forward or defense?
    - he plays well at both, and since our regular defensemen (John, Arie, Dave, Rich) are better off playing d, I think he should be our back-up defenseman.

    - what should our PP/PK lines be?
    - PP: Not sure. Most of our forwards are pretty evenly skilled offensively so it shouldn’t matter. PK: Dan and Mark are probably our most-defensive forwards, although others would work fine too.

    - who is going to win our team’s scoring race?
    - there will be quite a few guys with a ton of points. Dan got the most points on the exhibition game, so he could take it. If Wade stays out of the box, he could tally a few goals. Going by previous years, James, Joel, Mike, and myself have all had decent years in the past so any of those four got a chance as well.

    - how many Canucks will make the top 10 in the b-central scoring race?
    - at least 5. 13-0 games against the weak teams should vault everyone’s point totals

    - how many goals will Ken score?
    - 4 – anything can happen when he’s playing with good linemates ;)

    - who will be first to break the new 40 minute penalty limit?
    - Wade

    - who will have the least penalty minutes?
    - Matt only had 2 last year, and he’s playing forward now so…

    - who is most likely to have a fans in the stands at every game?
    - Mom and Dad Vanderhorst love watching their talented sons, so…

    - who is most likely to not miss a single game?
    - Me. This is my NHL. I don’t miss games.

    - who will spend the most on new composite sticks?
    - Probably me. I love me a nice smooth shaft. Um, wait a minute…

    - how long before Chris buys a new helmet to match his new pads?
    - Christmas. The real question is how long before another team actually puts a mark on his new pads. With our D, they shouldn’t get many shots.

    - we’ve had an offer or two for a coach - should we have one?
    - Mr. Smouter has apparently offered his services. I think it would be a good idea. Just getting someone to be a bench boss and keep everyone from bitching at each other would probably help our team. It would be good to have someone to mix up lines if one isn’t working, or to insist on certain players in certain situations. We’ll bring it to a vote the next time we meet.

    - should we have some more practices?
    - I would like to, although I realize most of you don’t think it’s worth adding $15 more onto the already high dues. If we decide to get a coach, I think we definitely should so that he can learn a bit about the team before he takes control.

    - how much will we beat the Vipers by?
    - 10-0, after 20 minutes…

  • Haha.. Okay Jack, Here's my thoughts. You guys will have a tough time beating the sharks for sure, You won't win the B central for the fact too many of your guys will be suspended due to the new leauge penalty rule, Biggest competition, well us. you'll draw the most penalties against us. Lines, never thought pylons could play hockey. Goals for? not sure. you couldod run into some tough goalies. my guess on who will make the top 10, Jack and maybe Joel. Ken won't score any goals this year. just 4 assists. on the thought on new composits, you answered that nicely. and the score vs the Vipers, I have no clue. depends who is in net and how many guys show up. If i had to pick a score, I would have to say 7-5 for you guys. thats just a guess. keep the trash talking going. we don't play you guys till Oct. 28th. till then, good luck out there boys.
    Mike

  • How is ken going to score if he's always on the bench? Oh... and Mike... to keep your GAA down... you might want to skip the game against us.

  • The league website is updated, and it is setup for the new season. Keep in mind that currently the schedule on the league website is wrong. For our accurate schedule please refer to the one on the front page of our team website.

The first game is this Saturday night (October 14) 10:00 @ the new Wave Twin Center against the Predators. If you can’t make it let me know, so that I can determine if we need subs or not.

  • I hate to keep harping on this, but has anyone been able to come up with anymore sponsorship money?

As of right now, without anymore sponsorship money, the fees per player will be $485. That includes the $85 jersey/socks, but it is still quite high. If we can raise $1100 more, it will drop to 400 each which would be more managable.

Please talk to whomever you gotta talk to, to see if we can get some more money, and let me know soon. Thanks...

PS: I've updated the schedule on our site to include the beer schedule. Chris is up this weekend. I've also included link to a printable copy of the schedule.
