Recap: 10/21/2006 Canucks vs Sharks

The Canucks met the Sharks this past weekend in a heated battle for the title of “the best team in the worst division”. The Canuckers were all fired up for the game expecting a hard-skating physical battle. As the team warmed up, talent oozed out of the players and the team was full of confidence. Then the game started… Within the first 5 minutes the team realized that no amount of talent or confidence was going to win the game. The referees looked up into the stands and saw a hoard of young parents out to drive their high-school aged sons to the game. Naturally the referees took this to mean that they were refereeing a Reach-Forth hockey game where any physical contact or extra effort was frowned upon. In the span of one or two shifts, half our team was in the penalty box, giving the Sharks power-play after power play for most of the first half of the game. Upset at the referees a few of our players took it upon themselves to speak to the referee in a manner which resulted in more penalties, a few misconduct penalties, and a multi-game suspension for a certain right-winger. The Sharks scored two goals in the first period during these penalties and so we were down two goals early. In the second period we found ourselves playing 5-on-5 for a few minutes which resulted in two goals to tie the game. The first goal was a beauty by Mike Smouter who was trying extra hard to make up for the fact that he didn’t score the previous week against the Predators when 7 other Canucks did. The other was a crash the net goal, possibly scored by Ken, but the refs took his moment of fame away from him by crediting the goal to Wade, who seems to be paying the refs to get him more points than James this year. Anyways, that was all the team could muster as in the third, the team collapsed and let in 2 goals which sent the team into a state of disorder and chaos. Not our finest moment as a team, but we’ll work on it. The game finally ended, with a final score of 4-2, and the team pulled their socks back up by a nice cheerful after party at the good ol’ Coach.

I requested in last game’s recap comments to get pictures taken at every game. Loretta showed up to take a few pictures and ended up making this sweet video. It’s pretty cool. (except for that ugly mug in the first bit) It shows a goal or two, some nice saves, as well as Ken’s penalty. Apparently he is our new team goon, now that James is gone for a few games. Anyways, thanks to Loretta for the video.

Next week the team meets the Vipers who are now a hardened team of Brampton veterans that are in a not-so-heated battle for the title of “worst team in the worst division”. It should be a good opportunity to get back to basics and pad the old score sheet. Game time is 10:00 at the Wave Twin Center.

  • Seeing you guys will beat the Vipers probally 20-0, Rumour has it that Mike Linde quit the team after his team failed to win yet again. also heard that after there loss, a huge argument went on in the dressing room between Mike and a number of players. I've talked to Mike this past weekend and he has no intrest in returning to play for the Vipers. Should be an easy win next weekend boys. Go Nuck's

  • Mike... we know that you wrote the first comment... but anyway... if you look close at the video... I did in fact score that goal... not Ken. :) Also... I talked to a few elderly and more experienced hockey players that are more than willing to help us get out shit together... they want to have a practise to see who fits each position best. Such as having Mike smouter at center and on the powerplay... and Mark as our main anchor on defense. See what you think... I think we could use the help.
    Cheers,
    Wade.

  • I agree with Wade. We definitely need help to get our shit together. As team rep, I tried my best to keep things under control at the last game, but it's tough when everyone is pissed off. As you could all see last game, this is a tough group of players to control, and I don't think that any player is going to be able to do an adequate job of maintaining order and assigning line, plays etc. Having a non-player, such as a coach, to guide us into a well-oiled machine that utilizes our skill, and to help keep our bitching to a minimum will help our team immensely. With the talent level on our team, we should be able to easily beat any team in our division. Also, since our team is made up of friends, there should be no reason for players to leave the rink feeling like they didn’t have fun – win or lose.

I'd love a practice, but we'll see if everyone is up for it or not. We do have 8 games against lesser teams before we play this team again, so let’s use them to figure out what we have to do. Wade - if you want, give me a call tonight and we'll talk about the coaching position.

  • if all players are willing to listen to a coach, then by all means, we could use one. Please don't get a coach so 10 of the 13 guys can bitch at him instead of eachother. That's not fair to the poor sucker behind the bench. We'll all have to agree to listen to his lines and opinions. I'm up for some help in controlling the team so it's not so embarrassing.

I don't think we need a practice to figure out where we should be playing. We can use the viper/predator games for that. Don't forget we haven't had a full team out yet...and that always messes up line combo's. As we can assume, James is out for a few, so it's still gonna be hard to come up with firm lines, but we can still experiment with different centres--not a bad idea Wade.

Any REAL offers from someone who would be willing to control our crazy team?? Warn them, (if they weren't already at the game saturday!!! :)

  • Hey guys. Please keep all comments positive. I'm not going to let this website be the place where people bitch at each other. That is exactly the thing we are trying to eliminate from our team. We don't want to post anything up here that is going to destroy any team camaraderie that we might have left.

  • After some serious talking with the Vipers team, I will make my decission on Game night who will be in Net against you guys. I think i'll pull Mr. Pylon out and put it in net.For 1 it will keep my goals against average down. On the other hand, Chris, Centre Ice buddy. Got to show off our battle scars in Cancun man.

  • I've also asked Arie to ask James Penninga to come out and take James Poort's place for the next game so that we have 3 full lines to work with. It's tough to learn to play together when your linemates are different every shift.

If anyone else can't make it please let me know.

As far as who is playing with who, we are going to use the next game or two to experiment with different people at different positions. We will hopefully have a coach to help with this. Just because so-and-so played one position in past games or seasons, doesn't mean that is the best position for that player on our team. We all have to put aside any egos or ideas and try what is best for our team.

  • Well it was tough games guys, they had us on our heels in the start, but we battled back pretty well considering.
I dont mind getting moved up to forward. I think a coach is a good idea as well, do we have anyone in mind?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 10/23/2006 5:08 PM

  • I really think that we should put Mike in the center for a game to see how it goes... He has the speed... he just has to get into the defensive mind set... if he gets that... I think he'll be our best center. Mike Linde... by putting a pilon in net... does that mean you are playing?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 10/23/2006 5:13 PM

  • We do have some in mind, and I'm planning on talking to them over the next couple days. I'll let you know what's going on as soon as it's all figured out.

By Blogger Jack, at 10/23/2006 5:13 PM

  • Who do you have in mind? Lets vote ;)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 10/24/2006 12:33 PM

  • I think that a coach is a great idea. It would reduce overall bitching and if we had some elder statesmen of hockey back there we might even listen to him when he told us to shut up and play our game. I also agree with wade as far as mike and I are concerned. and Linde your right we probably will beat the vipers 20-0.

  • A couch is a fantastic idea, and will deffinately help us to be the number 1 team. Someone commented on possible lines and had mark with john and me with dave...i think mark and i have a good thing going on defence and i think it would be a good thing to keep us paired up. I also think mike would be a good center but definately needs a defencive mind set to
    You take care now...buh bye
